About

It begins with a breath.

FreeBrea — Free, for freedom; Brea, from breathe. Said “free-bree-ah”. In Chinese, 自由呼吸.

A note from the founder

My name is Jake Lin. I founded FreeBrea.

For twenty-two years my work has been building spaces that make people feel something. At Dunhuang, Dazu, Longmen, Maijishan and Anyue, I worked on digital experience centres for cave sites more than a thousand years old. We used the most advanced technology of the day for one purpose: so that people would grow quiet, and feel, before they stepped into the caves.

The longer I did it, the more I noticed one thing. The caves have no technology at all. People walk in and fall silent on their own. Their breathing slows on its own. Everything we built was only helping people return to a state the caves had always been able to give them. Technology at its best brings people back, then steps aside.

I grew up in China. In my early twenties I went to France, to study in a small city called Saint-Étienne. Later I worked and lived in the United States and Canada. Today I live in Calgary, at the foot of the Rockies. Moving between three cultures for more than twenty years, what I learned was not which one is better, but that at their deepest they say the same thing. Zhuangzi wrote that heaven and earth were born with me, and all things are one with me. In the West, the word “spirit” still carries its root: breath. We are not outside nature. We are nature, breathing.

Then came these last few years. After the pandemic, a distance settled between people that is hard to name. The world got faster, louder and colder. I have founded several AI companies and work with AI every day. I know what it can do, and for that very reason I know what it cannot. It can make everything faster. It cannot give a person one quiet breath.

So I want to do something small. A room. A few people. An hour or so. One breath. Breathe first, then move the body, then rest, deeply. Before walking back out into the world, come back to yourself.

I called it FreeBrea. Free, for freedom. Brea, from breathe. Life happens between one breath and the next. So does freedom.

What we believe

Four roots, one thing

The East

Zhuangzi’s “fasting of the heart”: listen not with the ears but with the heart; not with the heart but with the breath. A path from outside in.

The West

The Stoics’ pneuma, the Latin spiritus — breath and spirit in one word. Spinoza’s God-or-Nature. Heidegger’s letting-be.

The body

Yoga’s eight limbs move from conduct and posture to breath control — the fourth limb — and then inward: withdrawal of the senses, concentration, meditation. The body settles first, the breath carries you over, then the mind.

Science

In many studies, slow breathing with a longer out-breath goes with a calmer body. We make no medical claims, and we say plainly where the research stops.

How FreeBrea is built

Belief, place, things

Belief

Life happens between breaths; people, technology and nature are one; come back first, then go out.

Not for sale. Said on the walls and in every telling.

Place

The hour and its five passages, the people who come back, the tea after class.

Sessions paid one at a time; nothing locked in.

Things

A tea first; then scent and sound; later, one screenless object.

Grown out of the community. Nothing nobody asked for.

Four principles

  1. 01 · Technology subtracts

Our technology has one job: less screen, less worry, a faster way back into the body. The room senses breath without cameras. We say “the room breathes”, not “AI”.

  2. 02 · Companionship aims at graduation

Success is when you no longer need reminding. A companion you cannot leave is a new kind of cage.

  3. 03 · Your record is yours

Your breath record belongs to you: processed on the device where possible, exportable and deletable at any time.

  4. 04 · Nothing to make you come back

No annual contracts. Stop any time; unused money comes back. No streaks, no push, no “we miss you”. You return only because you want to.

What we don’t do

  • No talk of the stars, no religious vocabulary, no fighting the world.
  • No products before the community exists.
  • Not a technology company: AI is never in our name, our slogan or our first screen.
  • Not a chain of yoga studios. Yoga is a door, not the house.
  • Not two countries at once.
